SRINAGAR: Two militants have been killed and several houses damaged in an encounter in Mujgand area of Srinagar outskirts.
A local news agency, GNS, quoted a police official confirming killing of two militants at the encounter site with an SOG personnel also being injured.
Adding that two bodies apparently of militants are yet to be retrieved.
The report further said that several houses too were damaged during the operation.
A senior police officer, on the condition of anonymity, told Kashmir Reader that stone-pelting was going on at the main market of Mujgund to disrupt the operation. Till 9pm, he said, the magnitude of stone-pelting, which was just 500 meters away from the encounter site, had been reduced.
He said that militants have been caught in a residential house, which is cordoned off from all sides. From the initial assessment, he said, three militants may be trapped. Civilians in the locality have been evacuated, he said.
On one side of the house is the Jhelum river, on the other side the Srinagar-Bandipora highway.
The encounter began when a joint team of SOG, army and CRPF launched a cordon and search operation at Mujgund area following inputs about the presence of some militants.
The officer said forces have installed night lights to proceed with the operation.
The encounter at Mujgund is the latest in a list to have taken place in Srinagar this year. The last one was in Fateh Kadal, where two Laskar militants, both from the city, were killed. In its neighbourhood Chhatabal, two militants were killed earlier this year, on of whom was a resident of the old city, and another who is as yet unidentified.
