SRINAGAR: An army soldier was injured in an encounter between militants and government forces that broke out on Saturday evening at Ghaat Mohallah of Mujgund on the outskirts of Srinagar, a police official said.
The gunfight was still going on till this report was filed.
A senior police official pleading anonymity on told Kashmir Reader that the soldier has been removed to army hospital for specialised treatment. He said that stone pelting clashes also erupted at the main market of the Mujgund, just 500 metres away from the site, to disrupt the operation.
However, according to him, intensity of clashes reduced as forces were on job to prevent any disruption in the operations.
The militants believed to be three are holed up in a residential house, which has been cordoned off from all the sides. Locals in the neighbourhood have been evacuated to safety, added the police officer.
The encounter began when a joint team of SOG, Police and CRPF launched a cordon and search operation at Mujgund area following inputs about the presence of militants.
The official said that nothing can be said about the how long the encounter would prolong. As of now, he said, forces have installed flood lights to prevent escape of militants.
This encounter has added to the list of fights erupted in the city this year. The last encounter in Srinagar broke out in Fateh Kadal, where two Laskar militants including top commander Mehraj Bangroo alongside another city boy were killed. Before that two militants were killed in May in Chattabal neighbourhood of Srinagar.
