BARAMULLA: The people of Hamray area of Pattan in this north Kashmir district on Thursday staged protest against the shortage of potable drinking water in the area. They also blocked the Srinagar-Muzafarabad highway.
Shouting slogans against the Public Health Engineering (PHE) department, the locals said authorities had few years ago constructed a tube-well in the village but its water is not safe for drinking.
“We had already requested the department to arrange clean water for them but they always turned deaf ear towards our genuine concerns. We even provided the place to extract clean water, but till now, no steps have been taken by the department in this regard,” the protesters said.
Meanwhile, Tehsildar Pattan Moien Azher Kakroo along with DSP Zafer Ahmad reached the spot and assured the people that their problem will be redressed on priority basis.
After assurance, the people called off the protest and the traffic movement resumed on the busy highway.
