Notes on the Significance of the Putative Opening of the Kartarpur Corridor

The moment Imran Khan, cricketer turned politician and Prime Minister of Pakistan, assumed power, he started showing the signs of noble intentions, especially in terms of attempting ease the continuous and growing tensions between the neighboring and nuclear power countries of South Asia, India and Pakistan respectively. The opening of the Kartarpur corridor for Sikh pilgrims, in particular and for the common masses, in general, is one of its results that came to light a few days ago.
The Kartarpur border, also known as Kartarpur Gurdawara, is a border gate or border corridor between India and Pakistan. Since partition, no Prime Minister from either country has been able to carry out such an initiative so that the long-departed kith and kin from both sides could meet each other easily. Initiatives like these must be appreciated by one and all without any prejudicial bent of mind. It can also pave a way to the path of peace and stability in the region and can play a pivotal role in the corridors of dialogue between the two nations.
It’s imperative to mention here, that Prime Minister Imran Khan during the groundbreaking ceremony of Kartarpur corridor stressed the foundation of faith and peace which is a very good sign for the region especially for Kashmir and also for the two nations to bridge their differences.
In fact, it is no less than a miracle to open an international border with visa-free access as the true countries have already fought three wars and also they have been using different narratives against each other in order to justify their respective positions. So, in this regard, it is a good step that the Sikh community will have free access to go for the pilgrimage to the holy shrine of Guru Nanak Sahib, the founder of Sikhism who died there in the 16th century.
In truth, it allows the two nations an opportunity to initiate the corridors of peace and dialogue so that the continuous bloodshed in Kashmir may stop; otherwise, we may come to a stage where it will be hard-fought to have any control on the situation even though there can be no denying the fact that the situation in Kashmir is already worse to such an extent that there is hardly any day when people do not participate in the funerals of nears and dears.
It is a compelling time to prioritise the long pending Kashmir issue which has taken thousands of lives, irrespective of age, gender, and caste and may continue to do so if the two nations do not cross the constrictive barriers of the nation-state.
Unless the two nations do not come out of their arrogance and truculence plus the narrow confines of the nation-state, the Kashmir issue will hardly be paid any heed. In fact, the Kashmir conflict does not remain an issue till the restrictive barriers of the nation-state are not removed.
The Kartarpur Corridor initiativ can be taken as a good opportunity by the two nuclear power nations to initiate the process of dialogue and to resolve all outstanding issues.
The peace initiative from the Imran Khan led government must be appreciated on the ground level by Indian leadership equally. As he said that they are both nuclear power nations and must strive for peace so it becomes compelling that his message is reciprocated by India in order to bring peace in South Asia. To conclude, it is rightly said that it takes two hands to clap. Therefore, the current moment is the right time to initiate dialogue and cross the confines of the nation-state toward of peace, humanity, the credible leadership.
