AWANTIPORA: Railway authorities on Friday evening suspended train services on the Srinagar-Banihal track following a stone-pelting incident between Awantipora and Panzgam railway stations.
Northern Railway’s area manager told Kashmir Reader that train services were suspended due to security reasons. He said some youths came to the railway track and hurled stones on security forces deployed for railway safety.
Train services had been resumed on the Srinagar-Banihal track on Friday after remaining suspended for two consecutive days.
Meanwhile, a complete shutdown continued for the second consecutive day in Awantipora town, Khrew and Shar Shali areas of Pampore on Friday in protest against the killing of two local Hizb militants, including a district commander.
Hizbul Mujahideen’s commander for Pulwama district Adnan Ahmad Lone, alias Uqaab, resident of Braw Bandina, Awantipora, and his associate Adil Bilal Bhat, alias Umair Al Hizbi, resident of Malangpora, Pulwama, were killed by government forces in a gunfight at Shar Shali on Thursday.
The slain militants were buried after multiple rounds of funeral prayers attended by thousands of people on Thursday amid pro-freedom and pro-Pakistan slogans in their native villages. A complete shutdown was also observed in protest against their killings.
The shutdown continued on Friday as well, with markets, business establishments, petrol pumps staying closed in Awantipora, Shar Shali, Khrew and adjoining villages, reports said.
Officials of Islamic University of Science and Technology (IUST) Awantipora had already postponed all exams scheduled for Friday. A notice from the varsity said that class work would also remain suspended on Friday and new dates for exams would be notified later.
According to police, Adnan Lone was one of the top commanders of Hizbul and had a long history of crime since 2015. He was a close associate of Hizbul commander Reyaz Naikoo and had escaped from an encounter site at Srinagar earlier.
Adil Bhat was also a close associate of Reyaz Naikoo, police said, adding that among several other crimes he was involved in the killing of Head Constable Ashiq Hussain at Awantipora in October 2017.
