A mentally challenged woman has been raped by those who can only be called criminal predators. In a way, this is a reflection of how some view the mentally challenged in our society: a vulnerable young woman, who probably had lost sense of being, time and space, was marauded upon by vicious sub human beings. ( Actually and in reality, it is these criminal predators who are mentally unsound driven as they are by lustful , perverted predation and criminal instincts). Broadly speaking, we have a problem in society: our mentally challenged people, are at its receiving end. They suffer from a double whammy, so to speak. First, their families abandon them and then society is either indifferent towards these special people or, as the “case” in contention demonstrates, even callous. These victims of society are not mentally challenged by choice; their overall mental condition accrues from a welter of reasons. But, the onus is on us, that is, members of society, to see to it that they not only are enabled to live reasonably dignified lives but also they are taken care of. In some instances, the condition of the mentally challenged is , to an extent remediable. However, because of society’s indifference, usually, their condition worsens and they are left at the mercy of elements or the unscrupulous criminals and perverted desperadoes. From a certain perspective then, society, on account of its omissions, is complicit in the treatment of the mentally challenged and we are answerable to Allah for this. It is therefore about time that we awaken from our slumber and shoulder responsibly the duty of care we owe these special people. Now, returning to the “case” in contention, the approach should be two pronged: one is the guilty must be accorded exemplary punishment which must serve as a deterrent to others. Second, the female victim in contention must be rehabilitated by diagnosing her issues with care and diligence and proper treatment given to her. Yet again, from a larger perspective, horrendous incidents like these must raise our consciousness and awareness of some ills that plague our society. If these odious things are happening, even at a very small scale, something is wrong somewhere. We must, in lieu of this, review , introspect and face up to these issues. Our society has always and is driven by compassion and empathy; it is these values that we must always and under any condition, permutation and combination uphold!
