‘Backbone’ of solid waste management system prone to health problems

SMC organises ‘free medical camp’ at Achan

SRINAGAR: Ecopeace Resource Management Foundation, one of the six Information, Education and Communication (IEC) partners of Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) organised a free medical camp here at Achan landfill site.
“Workers at Achan are the backbone” of the solid waste management system in Srinagar and “are prone to various health problems”, an official handout read.
To elevate their health conditions, ‘Ecopeace’ in collaboration with Sorganised free health check-ups which included free supply of medicines, blood donation, free consultations from dentist, etc. for the workers, it read.
More than 100 SMC field workers of Achan and ‘ragpicker community’ participated in the medical camp.
SMC Commissioner, Solid Waste Management Officer, Chief Sanitation Officer and other officers also attended the camp at Achan.
The Project Management Support Unit (PMSU) team from All India Institute of Local Self Government (AIILSG) was also present at the event to guide the IEC partner in organising the medical camp and monitor the same, the handout added.
