The conditions that obtain in Kashmir, overlaid by multiple stresses and, of course, youthful forays into harmful and deleterious ways of life are making some youth in Kashmir take recourse to drugs. While the overall problem is not overwhelming in the sense of proportionately and in relative terms, but the fact remains that it is a problem. Drug addiction among youth, it may be pertinent to note, is a global issue and problem. The usual response to it, that is, choking off supply and supply routes, has not entirely worked. (Suppliers of drugs find ways to cater to demand). The problem or the issue then is that of demand. If it is demand that is choked then the issue will, to a large extent, be obviated. The obvious question here is how? First and foremost, there should be sensitization among the most vulnerable cohort, the youth. This segment of the population must be alerted to the dangers and pitfalls of drug use and abuse. Second is the important role of families and parents who must provide a supportive and encouraging environment for their young wards and not put undue stress on them. Third, the religious leaders of society must rise to the occasion and make strenuous efforts to caution against the peril of drug addiction. But, these are in the nature of pre emptive or preventative measures. There are innumerable young people who have actually fallen into the trap of drug addiction. Here, the role of broader society becomes critical in weaning the victims off the blight. The key word here is victim. Instead of viewing those who have fallen into this trap, society should see them(or most of them) as victims and then empathize with their plight. All efforts must be made to actually encourage those caught in the vicious vortex of drug addition to get rid of this and wean them away from this noxious and toxic blight. The role of professional drug deaddiction programs where professional psychiatrists diagnose the problem of each individual addict, on a case by case basis , and then prescribe individual care and remedies, must be taken recourse to. Drugs and addiction thereof eat away at the vitals of youth. These not only scar users but also makes their and the lives of their loved ones miserable. There are also enormous social costs given that youth are the future of society. It is then about time that society rises to the occasion and helps in getting rid of this vicious menace!
