Shopian: The 6 militants killed in Shopian’s Batgund village on Sunday were identified by police as:
1.Umar Majeed Ganaie, code name Abu Hanzalla, son of Abdul Majeed Ganaie resident of Souch village of Kulgam. District commander of Hizbul Mujahideen for Kulgam. Joined ranks on December 10, 2015. He was A++ category.
2: Mushtaq Ahmad Mir, code name Hammad, son of Ghulam Hassan Mir resident of Cheki-Cholan Shopian. He was district commander of LeT, active from June 27, 2014. He was A++ category and believed to be the longest-surviving militant in the district.
3: Mohammad Abbas Bhat, code name Ali Abbas, son of Abdul Jabbar Bhat of Mantribugh Shopian. Bhat become district commander of Hizb recently after Zeenat-ul-Islam joined Al-Badr outfit. He was A category and had joined militant ranks on Sep 25, 2016.
4: Mohammad Waseem Wagay, code name Saifullah, son of Abdul Hameed Wagay of Amshipora Shopian. He was affiliated with Hizbul Mujahideen, was category A, and joined ranks on Dec 7, 2016.
5: Khalid Farooq Malik, code name Abu Talha, son of Farooq Ahmad Malik resident of Bagander locality of Alyalpora in Shopian town. He was active since April 14, 2018, with Hizbul Mujahideen and was in category C.
6: Identification of sixth militant yet to be ascertained but most probably a Pakistani national.
It was a combined group of HM and LeT, as per police records. The police’s press release said: “All the killed six terrorists were wanted by the law for their complicity in a series of terror crimes including attack on security establishments and civilian killings in the area. With their elimination, all notorious terrorists of the belt have been successfully eliminated.”
Police said that as per their records, Mushtaq Ahmad Mir was a close associate of Zeenat-ul-Islam and was involved in several terror attacks and civilian killings. He was involved in the lobbing of grenade at Bonbazar chowk Shopian on 11.10.2016 in which 8 civilians had sustained injuries.
Mohammad Abass Bhatt was earlier convicted for a murder case in 2011 and sentenced for 5 years. According to police records, he was involved in the recent spate of gruesome killings of civilians in Shopian including the decapitating of 19-year-old Huzaif Ashraf. He was also wanted for the killing of young officer trainee Lt Omar Fayaz, Advocate Imtiyaz Khan, and four police personnel at Shopian in August this year..
Umer Majeed Ganaie had escaped from the Batmaloo encounter and his photo was recently circulated on social media showing his presence near clock tower Lal Chowk. He was involved in Pombai bank guard attack case in which 4 policemen and 2 banks guards lost their lives in 2017.
Mohd Waseem Wagay @ Saifullah was involved in killing of four police personnel in August this year, police said.
The Pakistani militant killed was wanted for gruesome killing of civilians in the area including the throat-slitting video uploaded on social media, police said.
The police statement ended with an advisory to civilians to not venture inside the encounter zone, as “such an area can prove dangerous due to stray explosive materials.”
