BUDGAM: After Budgam and Rathsun blocks witnessed no polling in the second phase of panchayat elections, no polling was held in Soibug on Saturday in the third phase as most seats were left uncontested and in the rest only a single candidate had filed nomination.
Elections in the third phase were supposed to be held in Soibug and Suresyar blocks in Budgam district on Saturday. The Soibug block is divided into 16 Sarpanch Halqas and 156 Panch wards.
Among the 16 Sarpanch constituencies, eight saw no candidate contesting and in the other eight, sole candidates were declared winners unopposed. Of the 156 Panch wards, 26 were won unopposed without any voting held. As many as 126 Panch wards have been left vacant.
Earlier, ten candidates had turned up to file nominations for the Sarpanch seats. Among these, papers of one candidate were rejected, while one withdrew his candidature from Soibug block.
Notably, Soibug is home to chief of Hizbul Mujahideen, Syed Salahuddin, who is currently in Pakistan.
In Suresyar block, 40.86 percent polling was recorded in 4 polling booths.
Suresyar block is divided into 16 Sarpanch Halqas where 7 won unopposed and voting was held for 4 Sarpanch seats. Five Sarpanch seats had no candidate and were left vacant.
Of Suresyar’s 120 Panch wards, 56 were won unopposed. No candidate filed nomination in 63 wards and elections were held only in one single ward.
The recent municipal elections in Budgam district were also held only in one ward among 72 wards, as either nobody filed nomination or a single candidate won unopposed.
In the first phase of panchayat elections held last week in some wards of Khan Sahib block, 30.14 percent of polling was recorded.
