Baramulla: Army commander Lt Gen AK Bhat, GOC 15 Corp, described the killing of six militants in south Kashmir’s Bijbehara as a major success for the army and police. Lt Gen Bhat was talking to the media in Baramulla at a function organised on the occasion of Guru Purab (Guru Nanak Jayanti) at the army’s 46 RR camp.
Bhat said that the encounter in Bijbehara was a “surgical operation” in which the government forces suffered no casualties or injuries.
When asked about a purported meeting of militants in Srinagar, he said that police was verifying the facts. Photographs of militants in Srinagar, he said, may have been created through Photoshop software.
Lt Gen Bhat said that the people of northern Kashmir were peace lovers and always ready to help the army. He said that targeting civilians was a major weakness of militants and they did so only to create terror among people.
He said that in the past 12 months, the army has killed hundreds of militants so as to create a peaceful environment in Kashmir. “Whosoever will pick up the gun, we will eliminate them all,” he said.
Bhat, along with GOC 19 Infantry, DIG Baramulla Atul Kumar, and CO 46 RR visited Gurdawara Chatipadshahi in old town Baramulla where they held special prayers along with the Sikh community of Baramulla.
