SRINAGAR: Chairman Tehreek-e-Hurriyat, Muhammad Ashraf Sehrai on Thursday hailed United Nations (UN) over passing Pakistan’s resolution on right to self-determination.

The United Nations General Assembly’s (UNGA) Third Committee which deals with social, humanitarian and cultural issues unanimously passed Pakistan’s resolution on the right to self-determination on Tuesday.

Sehrai in a statement issued here hailed Pakistan’s UN Ambassador over introducing Pakistan’s resolution on the right of self-determination which was adopted unanimously by the UN’s Third Committee on Tuesday with a record number of 83 countries co-sponsoring it.

“The adoption of the resolution reaffirms that the right to self-determination for the people of Jammu and Kashmir and Palestine is the fact of having to be respected and not removed or ignored,” Sehrai said.

Sehrai also thanked the co-sponsors and UN for showing their “firm and unwavering commitment to the right to self-determination for all occupied, oppressed and suffering people of Kashmir and Palestine”.

“It reaffirms the continued relevance of the right to self-determination, and sends a strong message of support to the people of Kashmir and Palestine who still find themselves subjugated and oppressed. The resolution serves to focus the world’s attention on the struggle by people in Kashmir and Palestine for their inalienable right to self-determination,” he said.

Sehrai said the UN/UNSC has a moral and political obligation to the people of Kashmir as promise made by the same institution to hold a plebiscite in Kashmir which so far has not been fulfilled as a result humanity is suffering immensely from last 7 decades.

“Jammu and Kashmir is not a territorial dispute between India and Pakistan. It is primarily a question of the rights of the people of the state of J&K,” he said.

Regretting the “lack of sustained attention” on Kashmir by international community, Sehrai said: “Since we believe and understand that Kashmir dispute remains at the centre of the regional conflict. So we appeal United Nations and international community to intervene and challenge the behavior of Indian state towards Kashmiri.”

He urged UN to initiate processes for granting right to self determination to the people of Jammu and Kashmir as did in East Timur and Sudan.

Sehrai said Kashmir issue has multiplied human tragedies and it was because of this lingering issue that millions of people were facing immense hardship such as over 10 thousand disappeared, over 5 lakh killed, and a state of uncertainty and instability was looming over the whole south Asian region.

Tehreek-e-Hurriyat chairman also expressed his gratitude to Secretary General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Dr Yousef bin Ahmed Al-Othaimeen for OIC’s full support to the people of Kashmir in their “legitimate struggle” for the fundamental right to self-determination and expressed hope that he would play a “positive and effective role” for its peaceful settlement.
