SRINAGAR: The meteorological department in Kashmir has forecast rain and snow on Friday even as overcast skies have improved night temperatures in the valley.
An official of the department said on Thursday that rains in the plains and snow in the higher reaches are likely to occur during the next 24 hours.
The minimum temperature was 1.8 degrees Celsius in Srinagar while it was minus 3 in both Pahalgam and Gulmarg. Kargil was at minus 7.8 degrees Celsius, the coldest in the state, followed by Leh at minus 6.4, the Met office said.
The strategic Srinagar-Kargil highway connecting the Ladakh region with Kashmir valley was closed for vehicular traffic to avoid any accident following fresh snowfall and slippery road conditions, officials said on Thursday.
Divisional Commissioner Kashmir ordered that Sonamarg–Gumri (Zojila pass) shall remain closed for vehicular traffic of all types from November 22 till further notice.
Srinagar-Jammu Highway remained open for one-way traffic on Thursday. On Friday, traffic will be allowed from Srinagar to Jammu subject to weather conditions.
