Shopian: Suspected militants on Thursday evening hurled a grenade into a camp of the police’s special operations group (SOG) which also houses the official residence of Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) of Shopian district.
A police officer confirmed the attack and said that the grenade exploded near the fencing of the camp.
Meanwhile, people in Shopian district observed a shutdown for the fourth consecutive day to mourn the killing of local militants by government forces. The Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL) had also called for a shutdown today to protest the killing of Tehreek-e-Hurriyat leader Mir Hafizullah in Anantnag by unidentified gunmen.
All business establishments, shops and schools remained closed and roads were almost deserted across the district.
Nine militants and a civilian have been killed during operations by government forces in the past 20 days in the district. Two civilians were also allegedly killed by militants for informing government forces about the movement of militants.
