Srinagar: Even as the department of Archives, Archaeology and Museum is celebrating Heritage Week across the state, the condition of several monuments and heritage buildings is deplorable.
At the shrine of Madin Sahib in Srinagar, which is a protected monument, a community hall is being raised in front of the shrine within the area prohibited for construction, while as the concerned authorities look the other way.
The construction of the community hall at Madeen Sahib Hawal started last year and by July 2018 one storey had been raised.
When Kashmir Reader had reported the issue at the time, the director of Archaeology Muneer-ul-Islam assured that he would look into the matter.
However, five months after, the authorities are still passing the buck, while the second storey of the hall has also been completed.
As per the rules of Archives, Archaeology and Museums Department no construction is allowed inside 100 feet radius of a protected monument.
“We have sent the letter to the Srinagar Municipal Corporation but as such nothing has been done,” Director Muneer-ul-Islam told Kashmir Reader.
Srinagar Municipality Corporation (SMC) commissioner Peerzadah Hafeezullah said, “We will see the rules and look into the matter.”
