Pampore: Amid calls for boycott and threats from militants against participation in Panchayat polls, as many as 150 nominations have been received by the District Panchayat Officer Pulwama from various villages of the district.
However, the numbers can increase or decrease as the nomination process is yet to be would up in some blocks.
The applications include 55 nominations for sarpanches and 96 for panchs.
Sources told Kashmir Reader that many migrant and local Sikh candidates have filed their nominations for Panchayat Polls in Tral, Dadsara and Panch blocks.
The highest number of nominations have been received from Tral block – 62, with 14 nominations for Sarpanch and 48 for panchs. However, nomination of one sarpanch and one panch was rejected while as five others including one sarpanch and four panchs nominations have been withdrawn, leaving the block with 55 valid nomiinations.
Aripal and Dadsara blocks of Tral have received 24 nominations including 13 for sarpanch. Nomination papers of two sarpanch candidates have, however, been rejected in Aripal, sources told Kashmir Reader.
In Awantipora block, only seven candidates have filed nominations including three for sarpanch.
In Pampore block, 28 candidates including a dozen migrant Pandits have filed their nominations. These include eight nominations for sarpanches and 20 for Panchs.
In Pulwama block ten candidates including six for sarpanch posts have filed nominations.
In Litter block six people have filed nominations for sarpanch posts, while only one nomination has been filed for panch.
In Shadimarg block, one candidate has filed nomination for sarpanch and five for panch posts.
In Achgooza block two nominations have been filed for sarpanch post and five for panchs.
Newa block has received two nominations each for sarpanch and panch posts.
In Kakapora block, four nominations have been filed for the election of Sarpanch and two for panch.
However, the total numbers might increase or decrease as four blocks have yet to finalise the candidates as the last date for filing nominations for Pampore and Achgoza blocks is November 22, and for Awantipora and Kakapora is November 26.
Pulwama has 11 blocks in all, with the elections commencing in the fourth phase of Panchayat polls wherein Pulwama and Aripal would go for polls.
Litter and Tral would go to polls in the fifth phase. Dadsara, Newa in the sixth, Shadimarg in the seventh, Pampora, Achgooza in the eighth and Awantipora and Kakapora would in ninth (final) phase, official sources told Kashmir Reader.
National Conference (NC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) along with CPI(M) have stayed away from the polls due to the legal challenge to Article 35-A of the Constitution in the Supreme Court.
