SRINAGAR: People from different walks of life on Monday expressed condolences and prayers on the demise of former chief secretary Muhammad Iqbal Khanday.
The 1978-batch IAS officer passed away late Sunday night at SKIMS Soura.
Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister and National Conference Working president, Omar Abdullah took to twitter and wrote: “Sorry to hear about the demise of Iqbal Khanday Sb. He was Chief Secretary in J&K & worked with me when I had the privilege of heading the government. My heartfelt condolences to his family & loved ones. Allah Jannat naseeb karey.”
In her condolence message, Peoples Democratic Party president, Mehbooba Mufti, mentioned that Mohammad Iqbal Khandey was a simple person easy to get along with and totally dedicated to his job.
The former Chief Minister appreciated the significant contribution of the officer to various departments of the state he has served during his tenure.
In his death, PDP President said, the State Government has lost a dedicated officer and a generous human being.
The former Chief Minister expressed her deep sympathies to the members of the bereaved family and prayed for the departed soul.
KAS officers association
The KAS Officers Association has expressed grief over the sad demise of former Chief Secretary J&K State Mohammad Iqbal Khanday (IAS).
In a condolence meeting convened by its President Tasaduq Hussain Mir on Monday at Civil Secretariat Jammu, the office bearers of the KAS Officers Association and various other officers attending the meeting expressed grief and shock on the demise of the veteran officer.
While expressing deepfelt condolences, the association prayed for eternal peace to the departed soul and forbearance to the bereaved family at this hour of grief.
The president hailed the deceased as an officer of impeccable integrity, with deep sense of commitment towards the people of the state and said that his demise is an irreparable loss to the State.
Senior PDP leader Nizamuddin Bhat has expressed deep shock and sorrow over the demise of former Chief Secretary Iqbal Khandey.
Bhat in statement said Iqbal, one of effective administrators, earned respect in the bureaucracy for his acumen and command.
“He (Khanday) contributed immensely in all sectors, particularly as head of planning and finance. He will be remembered for honesty, integrity and uprightness. He was an able officer whose influence is felt in the secretariat corridors even after his departure,” Bhat said.
“Alas, Khandey left for heavenly abode as a deprived person after an unforgettable tragedy in the death of his son in an accident. Iqbal has many fans who loved him for his unique behaviour as a human being, as an officer and as an intellectual. May his soul rest in peace,” Bhat said.

Ghulam Hassan Mir condoled the demise of former chief secretary Muhammad Iqbal Khanday.
