Safety Never Hurts. We Must do More to Protect our Homes

We are surrounded by technology and innovation.
Electricity is one of the greatest technological innovations of mankind.
It has now become such a part of our daily lives that we cannot think of a world without electricity. Electricity is now an important part of homes and industries. Almost, the entire gamut of devices at homes, businesses and industries are running because of electricity. But, unfortunately, our negligence has made electricity as one of the leading causes of death. Recently, in October 2018 , a woman from central district died of electrocution in her house; this is not only case, almost every month we see domestic electrocution cases.
People spend lakhs for electrical installation, but ignore the most important part of the installation, that is, earthing, which results in fatal accidents. Women and children mostly become the victim of this negligence. The main reason behind this negligence is lack of knowledge. Although the cost of earthing is 15%(approx) of the total cost of the wiring Installation that we do in our houses, but still people ignore this as unnecessary which later exacts a huge price.
Earthing is not complex; it simply means to connect the metallic (conductive) parts of an electric appliance or installations to the earth . The primary purpose of earthing is to reduce the risk of serious electric shock from current leaking into uninsulated metal parts of an appliance, power tool, or other electrical devices. In a properly earthed system, such leaking/fault current is carried away harmlessly while tripping the fuse. The cross sectional area of the Earth Continuity Conductor should not be less than the half of the cross sectional area of the thickest wire used in the electrical wiring installation.
Generally, the size of the bare copper wire used as earth continuity conductor is 3 SWG. But , keep in mind that, don’t use less than 14 SWG as earth wire. Plate earthing, pipe earthing, rod earthing, wire earthing are most common and reliable methods of the practice. One can adopt any of these.
Earthing also provides protection from large electrical disturbances like lightning strikes and power surges. It also aids in the dissipation of hazardous static electrical charges. Although, most electrical systems have fuses or circuit breakers for protection against a fault current, the human body may be fatally electrocuted by a current of less than one ampere which is well below the point at which a fuse . Earthing helps minimize such hazards from occurring. Hence, good and permanent efficient earthing is an integral part of any electrical system as it is directly related to the safety of human life as well as equipment. In order to reduce death risks at home while dealing with electrical equipment people should go for this and should hire skilled men for electrical installations
