The entire world, is not only at the cusp of but, in the midst of deep and far reaching uncertainty. Be it the domains of economics, politics, political economy, culture and identity, international relations and politics, uncertainty is all pervasive. This condition is not unusual; the world has been through this phase many a times. But, this time, however, unlike the past, the problem is there is neither leadership(of an ethical and a moral nature), nor an intellectual class that can actually steer the mundane affairs of the world toward salubrious directions, that redound to the general and overall welfare of the peoples of the world. Consider the state. An entity that , in terms of its provenance, corresponded to the nation, and was generally autarkic in nature, but which later , became more open to both people and capital, is retreating into itself. ( This trend is best encapsulated by the assumption of Donald Trump to the highest office in the United States and the West’s descent into populist nativism). If the state is retreating into itself, it has all sorts of implications and consequences, political, economic, cultural, military and so on. The largest impact will be( and has been) felt in the domain of globalization, the large , historical megatrend that was supposed to be the defining feature of both the present and the future. While we live in what may be called a “networked economy” , but some of the essential features of the contemporary world suggest that “deglobalization” is also happening. There then are opposing or even dialectical forces at work. Which of these forces will “win” and overpower others remains in the domain of the “unknown unknown”. But, in whatever form, permutation and combination, these pan out, they will have an impact that will define the world beyond. At this point in time, these forces and trends are denoueing and panning out of their own accord, so to speak. That is, such is their sheer momentum, that these are propelling politics and economics without the interference of political agency worldwide. Politics is nit guiding these but rather is being both informed by and guided by these large , powerful forces. There, to repeat, then is no leadership on the anvil that can make the world a more staid and a somewhat “ predictable” place. What then will the shape and form of the world in the near and the distant future. The answer is “ Wallah u Aalam”( Allah knows best)
