PULWAMA: Police on Thursday claimed to have arrested a Hizbul Mujahideen militant who was involved in the looting of seven AK-47 rifles and one pistol from the Srinagar residence of Wachi MLA Aijaz Mir on September 28 this year.
The militants was arrested along with one AK 47 rifle, two magazines, and 40 live rounds in south Kashmir’s Pulwama district, police said.
arrested militant has been identified as Rafeeq Ahmad Bhat @ Salahuddin Bhai, son of Mohammad Ashraf, resident of Achan Pulwama.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Pulwama Chandan Kohli told Kashmir Reader that it surfaced during initial questioning that the arrested militant was involved in the looting of weapons from Aijaz Ahmad Mir’s official residence in Srinagar.
Kohli said that the arrested militant belonged to the Hizbul Mujahideen and was active for the past three months.
Kohli said that on specific information, a joint naka (check post) was laid on the Lassipora-Achan axis road by Pulwama police’s special operations group (SOG), army’s 55RR, and 182 CRPF. During searches at the check post, the Hizbul militant of was apprehended along with one AK 47 rifle, two magazines and 40 live rounds.
A case has been registered at police station Litter, Pulwama, under relevant sections of law and investigation taken up, Kohli said.
The weapon looting incident took place on September 28 when a Special Police Officer (SPO) posted at PDP MLA from Wachi Aijaz Mir’s official residence in Srinagar’s Jawahar Nagar decamped with seven service weapons of on-duty policemen at the premises.
SPO Adil Bashir Sheikh, who was a cook at Aijaz Mir’s official residence in Jawahar Nagar, decamped with seven AK-47 rifles of his fellow policemen kept at the guard room of the official residence and also the MLA’s licensed pistol.
A resident of Zainpora Shopian, Adil was engaged as an SPO on March 11, 2017.
