TRAL: Hundreds of residents in Tral town held a massive protest demonstration against Power Development Department on Tuesday for failing to provide the electricity as per the announced schedule in the town.
The residents blocked the road in Tral –e-Bala and held a candlelight procession to protest the power crisis.
Local residents said that shops and other business remained closed in Tral-e-Bala while the movement of traffic was also affected for hours.
Protesters blocked roads in the town by putting huge wooden logs and electricity poles on roads and disrupted the traffic for hours.
The protesters said that children appearing in their annual examinations were the worst sufferers as they were unable to prepare for the exams in the absence of power.
They alleged that for past one month Tral town and dozens of its adjoining villages were reeling under darkness.
He said that, due to power cuts, the water supply in several villages also remains affected.
“PDD has failed to provide the electricity as per the announced schedule in sub division Tral,” a protestor said.
They also alleged that PDD officials have “illegally” supplied electricity to Amirabad village, due to which others suffer, and demanded the transfer of PDD officials in the sub division.
They said that PDD officials assured them of regular power supply, but nothing concrete has been done and the people have been left with no other option but to come on roads.
Later a candlelight procession was taken to ADC and Tehsil office Tral. After assurance from officials, the protesters dispersed peacefully.
Assistant Executive Engineer, Tral Mohammad Makbool told Kashmir Reader that they are getting only 30 megawatt of power these days compared to the 90 megawatts they normally receive.
