Srinagar: The State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) on Tuesday directed the Chief Engineer of Power Development Department (PDD) to file a report answering why unscheduled and irregular power cuts take place during winter season in Kashmir.
The SHRC headed by Retired Justice Bilal Nazki directed the PDD officer to specify as to why power cuts are effected without notice. The commission directed that the report be filed within one week.
The direction was passed over a complaint received by the commission which said that the PDD had started unscheduled and irregular power cuts in metered and non-metered areas across Kashmir valley, as a result of which people at large particularly students were facing hardships.
In Srinagar, both metered and non-metered areas were facing erratic power outages since a month, and last week, entire Kashmir reeled under darkness after snowfall damaged electricity infrastructure, the complaint said.
It added that Kashmir has a potential of power generation of nearly 2,400 MW, but still over the years power utilisation and supply has worsened.
