Conditions in Gaza appear to have reached or even passed a certain critical threshold. This is happening against the backdrop of the death of the “two state solution” whose funeral was pronounced after the United States recognized Jerusalem as the “capital of Israel. During and while Trump’s United States artificially made the Holy city as Israel’s capital, Gaza was being squeezed and choked by Israel. The political and economic conditions within Gaza reached a nadir and now there is the alarming potential of a full blown confrontation. Corresponding to type and indelible hypocrisy that defines Israel, it is blaming Hamas for the confrontation. As Gaza slides into chaos and the attendant misery for its people, the “ international community’ (whatever it means) watches as a mute spectator. The reasons are not difficult to fathom: international relations and politics are all about power and power politics. Israel recognized this and had latched onto United States as both a protector and ally. And, in turn, the United States subsidizes Israel’s bad and ruthless behavior toward Palestine and its peoples. To repeat, the world watches all this in silence. But, the ultimate irony is that the world sees Israel not as aggressor but as victim and Palestinians as aggressors. This self serving narrative and fiction maintained by sections of the Western media helps Israel and prolongs the conflict. Palestinians are also painted and portrayed as lesser human by the protagonists and supporters of Israel. In the entire process, reality gets obscured and Palestinians become both victims and sufferers. All this must and should end. One prudent and good starting point would be to make a sober and realistic appraisal of the conflict and take measures to remedy wrongs. Palestinians deserve a homeland and they must be given one. This is both their entitlement and right. Both the international community and the Arab world must be fair and just in this regard. And, the United States must realize and understand that its uncritical and reflexive support for and of Israel is doing the country no good , especially in and within the Muslim world. Introspection is then the need of the hour. But, in the immediate time period, the international community must ensure that the ongoing confrontation does not escalate beyond a point. In the least, and at this point in time, Palestinians , in general , and Gazans, in particular deserve peace and a life defined by dignity.!
