Handwara: A militant was killed in a brief gunfight with government forces in north Kashmir’s police district Handwara on Sunday afternoon.
Late, in the evening, police identified the slain as Ishtiyaq, a Pakistan resident, affiliated with Jaish-e-Mohammad militant outfit.
Earlier, police sources said that a group of two militants took position at Handwara Bypass, close to the fruit mandi, and attacked a police party checking vehicles on the road.
In the return fire, police said, one unidentified militant was killed and another escaped from the spot.
Independent sources told Kashmir Reader that militants had opened the pin of a hand grenade and were about to throw it towards the police party. They lost control and the hand grenade exploded in a militant’s hand, killing him on the spot. The other militant escaped towards the paddy fields.
Police however maintained that the militants fired at the naka party and one militant was killed in the retaliatory fire. Police said that a search operation has been launched in the area by army, police and CRPF troops to find the escaped militant.
