Shopian: MLA Shopian Mohammad Yousuf Bhat on Sunday termed the government’s announcement of compensation to snow affected farmers as “grossly inadequate”.
“The Governor’s administration is morally and constitutionally bound to come to the rescue of calamity affected people who are in desperate need of some relief and the announcement of relief amounts to adding salt to their wounds,” Bhat said in a statement.
Horticulture is the backbone of state’s economy, he said, and “government is bound to help the affected farmers who are in quandary”.
While retreating his demand for implementation of crop insurance scheme, Bhat said, “He had raised this issue of crop insurance scheme in state assembly and the same was announced by previous government but was not implemented.”
Bhat further urged upon the government for exemption of Kissan credit card loan to fruit growers whose harvest was damaged by the snowfall. “The loan waiver would benefit the farmers and will be an aid to the ailing horticulture sector,” he added.
