America’s so called “war on terror” has till now claimed hundreds and thousands of lives. The nomenclature that America gave to its wars of choice in Iraq and Afghanistan, that is, “war on terror” was and is flawed and self serving, following attacks on its homeland. It was aimed to make these unwarranted wars palatable to the American public and garner international support for these illegal and immoral (mis)adventures. But, the price was and is being paid by hundreds of thousands who became victim to these. It may be pointed out that America was at the apogee and peak of its power when it initiated these wars. The unique power constellation that accrued from America’s immense hard power then was called “unipolarity”. That is, in terms of the international system polarity, there was only one state that had it all, and that was America. But, fast forward, almost a couple of decades and what we have is a system polarity that is tripolar , or loosely multipolar, with Russia and China, jostling and jockeying for power in international relations and politics. This is not all. America has lost both its soft power, moral standing(if it had any), and perhaps even legitimacy, without. All this pans out in Donald Trump and his presidency. The man is picking fights with who he chooses, like Iran and China and within America there is acute and intense polarization with its democracy and the system thereof falling victim to the blights of populism. In combination, the structural trends that define contemporary America, within and without, economically, politically, morally , ethically and in terms of other larger issues, suggest that the country is in decline. If it declines absolutely, the liberal world order that the country helped create will also go or , in the least, get dissipated. New powers will emerge ( and are emerging) along with new and different power political constellations. Whether the new system, and power political configurations will bode any good is not clear at this point in time. What stares us in the face is the process of American decline, which is being hastened by Donald Trump, his cohort and the attendant policies . An “unknown unknown” that is alarming but which is real is whether America will take its decline gracefully or whether it will lash out and wage wars. While America’s decline is not fantasy, but what the country is going through accrue from the wages of arrogance or hubris. Others should be aware and not follow the same path!
