Sonamarg: The strategic 434-km Srinagar-Leh highway remained closed for the third consecutive day on Saturday due to heavy snowfall at Zojilla pass.
An official said that snowfall during the past 24 hours in Zojila and Sonamarg areas continued till late Saturday evening, resulting in heavy accumulation of snow on the highway.
Officials said that on the highway, 2 feet of accumulated snow was recorded at Sonamarg and 4 feet of accumulated snow at Zojila.
Reports said that a large number of vehicles, including those carrying passengers, are stranded on both sides of the Zojila pass.
The highway was closed for traffic on Thursday following snowfall and slippery road conditions at Zojila Pass, Zero Point, Menimarg, and Drass. No vehicle is still being allowed to ply from wither side of the highway, keeping in view the safety and security of passengers, officials said.
