Srinagar: The pro-freedom camp Saturday condemned the killing of a “mentally unsound” man in Shopian district and termed the incident as “tragic and open aggression by the security forces”.
Rayees Ahmad Wani, resident of Begam Kulgam was shot dead by the army at a village in south Kashmir’s Shopian district near the fence of an army camp on Saturday morning.
The pro-freedom parties and leaders who denounced the incident includes – Hurriyat Conference (G) chairman Syed Ali Geelani, Hurriyat Conference (M) led by Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Tehreek- e-Hurriyat chairman Mohammad Ashraf Sehrai
“It is a cold-blooded murder,” Geelani said in a statement. “With unbridled powers and impunity, the forces are killing Kashmiris whenever and wherever they wish.”
The resistance leader called for stringent action against those involved in this act and demanded impartial probe.
While extending heartfelt condolences and sympathies with the family members of slain person, Geelani said that “we stand with them and prayed for eternal peace to the departed soul”.
Rejecting the police version about the killing, Syed Ali Geelani said “these statements are issued to befool people”.
The Hurriyat Conference (M) led by Mirwaiz Umar Farooq while denouncing the killing, in a statement said: “The forces feel proud in killing an insane person as they are enjoying ultimate impunity.”
The spokesperson in a statement also denounced search operations in south and north Kashmir areas and stated that “under the guise of search for armed youth, forces go berserk and resort to manhandling of inmates including women and vandalize household goods and other electronic gadgets which is condemnable”.
The Tehreek-e-Hurriyat chairman Mohammad Ashraf Sehrai in a statement said, “The killing of a mentally ill man in Shopian is a familiar disturbing trend.”
“The forces are taking advantage of laws like the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) to kill Kashmiri’s,” Sehrai said.
