SHOPIAN: A mentally unsound man who allegedly tried to walk into an army camp was shot dead by army soldiers at Pahnoo village in Shopian district in the intervening night of Friday and Saturday, police said.
A police official said that the mentally unsound man tried to walk into the army camp of 34 RR situated at the Ambri research centre of SKUAST university campus at Pahnoo village at around 3am.
He said that a sentry manning a bunker fired some warning shots in air but the man did not stop.
The sentry then fired some shots at the man, killing him on the spot, the police official said.
The official identified the slain man as Rayees Ahmad Wani, resident of Begam village in neighbouring Kulgam district.
Family members and relatives of the killed man reached Shopian and held a sit-in protest along with his body at Batapora Chowk in the town. The family members raised slogans demanding justice. One of the relatives, Javid Ahmad, said that Rayees was missing from home since Friday afternoon.
“We contacted the police, posted a missing report on social media asking anyone who finds him to contact the family,” Ahmad said, adding that the family does not believe the police version of the killing. “He was killed in custody,” Ahmad said.
Family members said they received a call from Shopian police informing them that their son had been killed in army firing.
Witnesses said that when the family members and relatives were holding their protest, government forces intervened and took back the body. They said that later the body was again handed over to the family for burial.
