SHOPIAN: Class 12 students Zefam Fayaz and Ubaid Ahmad Bhat have both missed their Board exam papers due to being detained by police in Shopian district. Their families said that their sons were released on Thursday afternoon, but not before they had missed their exams. The Secretary of Jammu and Kashmir Board of School Education, Riyaz Ahmad, told Kashmir Reader that the two students will have to “go through a proper channel” to appear in the papers they have missed.
Zefam Fayaz was among nine persons who were arrested from their homes in night raids carried out by police in Gund-Darvesh (Daershalnoo) village of Shopian on October 24. Since then he was under police detention and missed two papers of Board exams.
Gulshana Banoo, mother of Zefam, told Kashmir Reader that she made repeated pleas to the police to let her son sit in the examinations, but the police turned down the family’s requests.
“My husband even told police to put him in custody instead, to let his son appear in the examinations,” she said, adding that the family provided all documents and Zafam’s examination admit card to the police, but to no avail. Zefam continued to languish in police custody at Zainpora police station.
Villagers said that as many as 10 students from the village were going to write the Board examinations but Zefam failed to do so, as he was among nine persons from the village arrested by police in night raids conducted a week ago.
Fayaz Ahmad Dar, father of Zefam, said that his son missed the Environmental Science and Education papers which were scheduled on October 28 and 31. He said that Zefam is a student at Government Higher Secondary School Munand in Kulgam and was scheduled to sit for exams at Yaripora higher secondary school in Kulgam district.
Another student who missed the Education paper due to police detention is Ubaid Ahmad Bhat, who was arrested by police from his home on October 30.
Ubaid, son of Nazir Ahmad Bhat, is a resident of Chitragam village in Turkwangam belt of Shopian district. Zefam, according to his father Fayaz Ahmad, was released late Thursday afternoon by forces. Similarly the family members of Ubaid told Kashmir Reader that he too was released.
Repeated attempts to contact the Senior Superintendent of Police Shopian on this issue failed.
