Stresses need to uphold farmers’ interests

Pampore: Secretary Agriculture Production Department (APD), Manzoor Ahmad Lone on Thursday stressed upon the need to uphold the interests of farmers during all the endeavours. He said “amid changing agriculture dynamics, nationally and internationally, we have to adopt concepts like integrated farming, protected farming and precise farming”, so that the visible improvement in the socio-economic status of the farmers could be achieved.
He said for the capacity building of farmers the orientation and skill based training programmes should be conducted on regular basis and asked the officers to work out the innovative ideas that could be translated into programmes and projects so that more young educated minds could be attracted towards agriculture and allied sectors, an official handout read.
Lone was addressing officers at a meeting to review implementation scenario of National Saffron Mission, after visiting Pampore and adjoining areas. The meeting was convened on the sidelines of the visit to get feedback about various issues confronted by farmers.
While reviewing the saffron sector, he asked the concerned engineers that all the bore wells established under National Saffron Mission should be completely functional by 15th December 2018 so that sprinkle irrigation facilities to the saffron growers could be ensured, read the handout.
He asked the officers to ensure that every farmer had sufficient information about the different schemes and programmes that are being implemented by agriculture and allied departments. “Dissemination of knowledge among farmers is the key factor in achieving the desired results,” he added.
He said, “Amid shrinking farming land the agriculture has a challenge to optimise its use in terms of production and productivity on one hand and to maintain it as an economically sustainable resource on the other hand.”
