Kupwara: A woman was injured in Hajitra village in Tangdar village of frontier Kupwara district and a teenage boy in Leepa valley of Pakistan-administered Kashmir (PaK) was killed in fresh cross-firing by Indian and Pakistan troops across the Line of Control (LoC) on Wednesday evening.
Official sources said that Pakistani forces targeted several Indian Army posts in Tangdar sector to which the Indian Army retaliated. In the firing, half a dozen houses were partially damaged while a civilian woman sustained injuries and had to be shifted to hospital.
The sources identified the injured lady as Haneeza Begam, wife of Mohammad Rustum Malik, resident of Hajitra village. SSP Kupwara AS Dinkar confirmed to Kashmir Reader that a few houses were partially damaged and a lady sustained splinter injuries in her foot. He said the lady is stable after proper and immediate treatment.
Pakistan daily Dawn reported that 18-year-old Haroon was killed when Indian Army resorted to shelling in Bijildhar village of Leepa Valley, located nearly 100 kilometres southeast of Muzaffarabad.
Imran Shaheen, the Deputy Commissioner of Hattian Bala, of which Leepa Valley is an administrative unit, told Dawn that the shelling began at about 4pm and continued into the evening.
“Due to darkness and poor telecommunication links with the mountainous area, we are unable to immediately ascertain complete information of losses,” he said.
“Once the shelling stops or at least subsides, we may receive exact detail of losses,” he added.
The newspaper also quoted Shaukat Javed Mir, a PPP leader, that the shelling was intense and caused panic in the area.
“Those who have bunkers or trenches within or alongside their houses have taken shelter there due to which we are unable to establish contact with anyone there,” he said.
According to Mir, there had also been shelling for more than an hour in the morning, “but from post to post”.
Official sources on the Indian side of Kashmir said that Pakistani forces targeted different Indian Army posts at Hajitra, Sadpora, Jabri, Dhani, and Blackrock post.
On Tuesday, both the armies had exchanged gunfire for several hours in Tangdar sector.
