Pulwama: Violent protests broke out this afternoon in Pampore town of this south Kashmir district after rumours made rounds that one of the two militants killed in central Kashmir’s Budgam district in an encounter was a local militant.
Groups of youth appeared on the Srinagar-Jammu highway near Drangbal and staged a protest when rumours made rounds that a local militant Mohammad Amin was among the two militants killed in an encounter in Zugoo area of Budgam today morning, eyewitness told Kashmir Reader.
Angry youth, witnesses said hurled rocks at the government forces deployed along the highway. In retaliation, forces burst tear gas canisters to disperse the stone pelting protesters.
The ensuing clashes briefly suspended traffic on the crucial highway.
Meanwhile, a police officer told Kashmir Reader that the news of Amin’s killing in the encounter was not true.
Amin had joined Lashkar-e- Toiba militant a few months earlier.
