Anantnag: Two Jaish-e-Muhammed (JeM) militants, including the nephew of outfit’s chief Maulana Masood Azhar, were killed Tuesday in a fierce gun-battle with government forces in Chankitar village of Tral in Pulwama district.
Usman Haider, the nephew of Maulana Masood Azhar and his associate Showkat Ahmad Khan of Handoora Tral were killed in the encounter that lasted for more than four hours in Chankitar village of Tral, official sources told Kashmir Reader.
Police officials confirmed the recovery of two bodies and said they suspected third militant was also slain in the encounter
The gunfight began 16 hours after an attack carried out by militants on an army camp in Mandoora area of Tral, less than a kilometer away from the site of the gunfight.
A senior police official told Kashmir Reader, “Today at about noon, a Cordon and Search Operation (CASO) was launched in the area following inputs regarding presence of militants there.”
He said that the house where the militants were hiding was identified and the militants were asked to come out. The militants, however, chose to fight and opened fire at the government forces.
“The fire was retaliated and the gunfight ensued,” he said.
Intense clashes took place around the site of the encounter as well as in main town Tral. The forces fired pellets and tear smoke shells to disperse the stone-pelting youth.
One of the protestors sustained injuries during the clashes in main town Tral. He was treated locally and is stated to be stable.
