Syed Muhammad Ibn Syed Ahmad popularly known as Nizamuddin Auliya (RA) was born in Uttar Pradesh (UP) in 1634 AH. His ancestors migrated from Bukhara and settled Badayun UP. The father of Hazrat Nizamuddin (RA) died when he was only a five year old kid. Thereafter, that his mother took care of and instilled every good virtue in him. Nizamuddin received his early education from Maulana Aladdin after that he along with his mother went to Delhi from where he received further education from Maulana Shamsuddin and Maulana Kamaluddin Zahid.
As a child, Hazrat Nizamuddin(RA) mastered seven ways of reading the Holy Quran. He also mastered Arabic grammar, traditions of the Holy Prophet (SAW), Tafsir, mathematics and astronomy.
Hazrat Nizamuddin (RA) was known for his kind and benevolent behavior. He passed his nights in prayers for the fear of Almighty Allah and love of Holy Prophet (SAW). He used to deliver his lectures in the morning just after the morning prayers in order to enlighten the hearts of people with the message of Islam who attended and listened to him with due attention.
Nizammudin Auliya (RA) seems always ready to help poor and needy. Whosoever came to his door never left disappointed. In his own words , he said: “ how callous those people are who see the sufferings and miseries of their brethren and do nothing to help them”. Once a resident of Ghiaspura whose name was Jhajoo who often teased him but Nizamuddin (RA) never cursed him instead he forgive him and when he died, Nizamuddin himself led his funeral prayers.
There is a famous anecdote about Nizamuddin Auliya (RA): when some of his disciples implored him to rid the town of mighty hordes of flies that had invaded it and plagued the people’s life. Hazrat Nizamuddin (RA) issued an order to the flies to leave the town forthwith. As the order was pasted on the gates of the town, flies started quitting the town till all of them disappeared.
Hazrat Ameer Khusro (RA) was one of the most loved disciples of Hazrat Nizamuddin Auliya (RA). Once he said that if shariah (Islamic Law) permits me then I would like him to be buried with me in the same grave.
Nizamuddin Auliya (RA) remained a bachelor for all his life. Once his kamarband got away from his hand Baba Fareed (RA) said to him, tighten it properly and that too in such a way that nobody could open it except the Hoors of paradise. Hearing this he put his head on the floor and did not marry all his life.
A day before his death, Nizamuddin(RA) ordered his personal attendant Iqbal to distribute all that what was in his room and storeroom to the poor and needy so that he may not have to give an account of the same before Almighty Allah. Once of his disciples had kept some food grains, but when Hazrat Nizamuddin (RA) heard he immediately ordered that let the poor have everything and sweep the floors of my room so that nothing is left undistributed.
Just before his death on the morning of 18th Rabi-us-Sani 725 AH , Nizamuddin(RA) ordered his companions to go out all the corners of India to preach and propagate the religion of Islam. The tomb of Hazrat Nizamuddin Auliya (RA) is in Delhi which is visited by lakhs of devotees throughout the year to pay respect and homage to this great saint.
