Sopore: Two militants killed in a gunfight in Pazalpora village of Sopore on Friday have been identified as foreigners affiliated with Lashkar-e-Toiba, one of them a top commander who carried a reward on his head.
Police on Saturday said that top militant commander Abu Maaz and his associate Zubair alias Ali Bhai were killed in Friday’s gunfight in Pazalpora.
Maaz was a top commander of LeT in northern Kashmir, active from last four years and carried a reward of Rs eight lakh on his head.
SSP Sopore, Javid Iqbal confirmed the identities of the wo militants.
“He(Abu Maaz) played a vital role in recruiting youth into militancy, especially in Sopore,” the SSP said and termed the killing as “major achievement” for the government forces.
A police official said that Maaz was involved in a number of attacks in Sopore including the abduction and killing of a butcher, Tawseef Ahmad Ganie, besides several special police officers (SPOs).
The two militants were buried at Reshiwari, a forest area of Rajwar, by locals to whom the bodies were handed over by police last night.
