Sopore: A soldier has been injured in a gun-battle with militants in Behrampora village of this north Kashmir Township.

In the wee hours today, army’s 22 RR, special operations group (SOG) of police and CRPF cordoned off Behrampora village here and started a cordon and search operation (CASO) witnesses told Kashmir Reader.

When the search team started advances, the militants hiding in a residential house opened fire upon the government forces, they said.

In the initial exchange of fire, one soldier of army’s 22 RR was injured.

SSP Sopore Javid Iqbal told Kashmir Reader that the militants fired upon the government forces when the suspected place was zeroed in.

“One soldier was injured in the encounter. He was immediately evacuated to military hospital for treatment,” Iqbal said.

Firing has stopped in the area but the search operation was underway when last reports came in.

Earlier reports suggested presence of two to three militants in the village.

Meanwhile, class work in all colleges and higher secondary schools in Baramulla, Sopore, Kreeri and Rafiabad areas will remain suspended today as a “precautionary measure”, officials said.
