SRINAGAR: The J&K High Court on Monday slapped penalty on several government departments for failing to submit details sought by it.
Hearing a PIL on PHE scam, the division bench of Chief Justice Gita Mittal and Justice Alok Aradhe imposed penalty of Rs 5000 each on departments of Horticulture, Floriculture, Fisheries, Pollution Control Board, Health Department and Geology and Mining.
The court on previous hearing had directed the departments to submit status report indicating the number and locations of all the toilets and latrines existing on banks of rivers, streams and tributaries which are source of drinking water for consumption of the inhabitants of the state.
The court remarked that it can’t tolerate lackadaisical approach of authorities and violation of its orders.
The court, meanwhile, directed Vigilance Organization Kashmir (VoK) to submit details and particulars of all the erring officials who were involved in the embezzlement in PHE scam worth crores of rupees, as the court has been informed that various employees, from the rank of junior engineer to executive engineer, are involved in the scam but particulars of the officers have not been given to court.
The multi-crore embezzlement of funds was unearthed in PHE department in Handwara Division in 2014 and immediately a PIL was filed seeking probe into the scam.
The drinking water scheme in Handwara division was carried under National Rural Drinking Water Program (NRDWP) but the amount, approx 45 crore, which was to be incurred on the scheme has allegedly been embezzled by the officials of PHE department.
