The wards which went to BJP are Ward 2, partly, Plan A and B, Ward 10, Mardar, and Ward 7, Nussu. Two wards were won by Independent candidates. Among the winners of the three wards that went to BJP, two are women – in Wards 7 and 10.
The BJP won nothing in Sumbal where Independent candidates took a lead over Congress by scoring a win in 8 wards of the total 13. The Congress settled with the rest 5 wards. Among the 13 wards here, 11 went for polls and 2 went to Independents uncontested.
Reacting over the majority secured by the Congress, MLA Bandipora Usman Majid said people had defeated communal politics.
“It was my appeal to them (people) that they protect us from these communal forces and it is they who have won today. I am thankful to them and the Congress will flourish in the upcoming elections too,” Majid said.
He said that the NC and PDP were responsible for bringing communal forces to Kashmir and they had given clear ground to communal forces by boycotting the municipal elections. “It was us who stood up against these forces despite unfavourable circumstances and fear among people,” Majid said.
