ANANTNAG: Militants attacked a CRPF camp on Monday night here in Newa area of Pulwama district, leaving at least two troops of the paramilitary force injured by bullets. The attack was carried out at the base camp of 183 Bn of the CRPF at about 9:45 PM Monday. A senior police official from the area told Kashmir Reader that militants fired a hand grenade at the camp using an Under Barrel Grenade Launcher (UBGL). “The grenade exploded within the camp premises but caused no damage,” the official said. “However, the militants followed the grenade attack with indiscriminate firing.” He said that two members of the force were injured in the firing and were immediately evacuated to Pulwama district hospital.
The official identified the injured as Santosh Bharti and Amit Kumar, both members of the 183 Bn. A doctor at the hospital said that Bharti had a bullet wound in his hand while Kumar had sustained bullet injuries to his shoulder.
“Kumar was later in the night shifted to a Srinagar hospital for specialised treatment,” the doctor said. “Both of them were stable, however.”
Following the attack, a large contingent of government forces reached Newa area and cordoned it off. Searches were carried out to try and nab the attackers, who had fled by then from the spot.
The attack created panic in the area as residents heard the grenade blast followed by indiscriminate firing from both sides.
“The attack was followed by searches, creating all the more fear in the area,” a resident told Kashmir Reader.
