Govt forces allegedly beat journalists in Kashmir’s capital city

Srinagar: Several journalists on Wednesday were allegedly thrashed by government forces in Feteh Kadal area of the city during a gunfight in which three alleged militants and a policeman were killed.

Journalists working with different media organizations alleged that the personnel of special operations group (SOG) of police thrashed them while they performing their professional duties at the encounter spot in Fateh Kadal.

The journalists who were allegedly roughed up by forces include Qazi Irshad, Wasim Andrabi, Danish Ismail, Arshid Ahamd and Basit Zargar.

“I was covering the encounter, when SOG personnel without any reason or rhyme thrashed me,” Zargar, who works with Amar Ujala, told Kashmir Reader.

Qazi Irshad, who works for Kashmir Times told this newspaper that the government forces fired shots to scare away the photojournalists who were taking pictures near the encounter spot.

“I was dragged and beaten by cops while their seniors were watching the scene as mute spectators. Even the keys of bike were snatched,” he said.
