3 militants, cop killed in a gunfight in Kashmir’s capital city: Police

Srinagar: Three alleged militants and a policeman have been killed in a fierce encounter in Fateh Kadal area of the city setting off massive protests.

Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kashmir SP Pani told Kashmir Reader that acting on a specific information about the presence of militants, police cordoned off Syed Ali Akbar locality of Fateh Kadal early this morning. He said that the house were militants was zeroed in. However, the house owner, Pani said denied presence of militants when approached by police.

“When police entered the house, they were fired upon by militants. We lost one of our jawans in the initial exchange of fire,” Pani said.

In the ensuing encounter, IGP said three militants were killed. He said identity of the slain militants was being ascertained.

However, sources told Kashmir Reader that Mehraj-ud-din Bangroo was among the militants believed to be dead.

Meanwhile, violent protests broke out near the encounter spot and adjoining Karfali Mohalla against the conduct of anti-militancy operation, witnesses told Kashmir Reader.

CRPF troopers and police, they said burst tear smoke shells and fired pellets to chase angry protesters who were hurling rocks at the government forces.

The clashes were going on when the last reports came in.
