Srinagar: Independent Langate lawmaker Er Rasheed along with dozens of workers was on Sunday detained by Jammu and Kashmir police when he tried to take out a protest march against the alleged harassment meted out Kashmiri students in Aligarh Muslim University.

Witnesses said that Rasheed along with his workers started a march from his official residence at Jawahar Nagar while raising slogans “stop harrassing Kashmiri students” and “offering funeral prayers is not a crime”.

Rasheed while taking to the reporters said that the protest was organised against the harassment of Kashmir students in Aligarh Muslim University.

The students who have offered absentia funeral prayers for Mannan Wani in the university campus is not a crime,” he said.

He termed the charges against Kashmir students as “totally wrong”. “We are demanding the withdrawal of charges against the Kashmiri students.”

As Rasheed tried to march towards Rajbagh, police swung into action, foiled the protest march and detained him.
