Shopian: Government forces on Friday fired tear smoke shells after violent protests broke out against a cordon and search operation (CASO) in Naidgam village of the district.
Eyewitnesses told Kashmir Reader that a joint team of army, CRPF and police cordoned off Naidgam village and started door to door searches. The search operation, witnesses said, infuriated the youth who hit the streets and pelted stones on forces.
“The forces lobbed tear smoke shells to disperse them. However, the youth regrouped and continued attacking government forces with stones,” witnesses said.
The residents accused forces of beating several villagers and damaging windowpanes of parked vehicles.
Meanwhile, fire broke out in a cowshed belongs to Ghulam Mohiudin Ganie after, residents alleged, a shell teargas exploded in it during the clashes. Locals took out spray motors to douse the fire, they said.
As many as 50 houses were searched in the village, locals said.
