Clashes erupt in Soura Srinagar after absentia funeral prayers offered for slain militants

Srinagar: Intense clashes erupted in Soura locality of Kashmir’s capital city Srinagar Friday afternoon.

The clashes, witnesses said, erupted after hundreds of people participated in the funeral prayers in absentia of slain Hizb militants killed in a gunfight with government forces on Thursday in Kupwara district.

They said that hundreds of people assembled after offering congregational Friday prayers in Jinab sb Soura and other mosques and offered funeral prayers in absentia to the slain militants.

Immediately after the absentia prayers, they said, that youths marched towards main market Soura where they were intercepted by a posse of police.

“People pelted stones on government forces who used tear smoke shells and pellet firing to disperse them, triggering intense clashes,” witnesses said.

Sources said that two youths have suffered pellet injuries during the clashes.

The clashes in the area were going on when this report was being filed.
