Shopian: Government forces on Friday burst tear smoke shells after violent protests broke out against the conduct of a cordon and search operation (CASO) in a village here in this south Kashmir district.

Eyewitnesses told Kashmir Reader that a joint team of army, CRPF and Jammu and Kashmir police cordoned off Naidgam village here and started door to door searches. The search operation, witnesses said infuriated the youth who hit the streets and pelted stones on forces.

“The forces lobbed tear smoke shells to disperse them. However, the youth regrouped and continued attacking government forces with stones,” witnesses said.

Both clashes and searches were going on in the village. Locals accused forces of beating several villagers and damaging windowpanes of parked vehicles.
