Baramulla: Thousands of people on Thursday participated in funeral prayers of top Hizbul Mujahideen commander Mannan Wani, who was killed along with his associate in a fierce encounter with forces in the frontier Kupwara district today.
Hundreds of people from Sogam, Tikipora, Karsun, Chaywan and other villages of Lolab this afternoon converged at the native village of the Hizb commander to attend his funeral prayers, witnesses told Kashmir Reader. By the time Wani’s body was brought to his village around 4:30 pm, crowd had swelled in thousands.
While women were seen beating their chest to mourn the killing of Wani, angry youth chanted pro-freedom, pro-militant and anti-India slogans to give an ire to their feelings. Later, the body of the slain militant was carried in a procession to his ancestral graveyard. He was buried amidst vociferous sloganeering.
Meanwhile, nearly a dozen journalists, working with local and Indian dailies were barred from visiting Tikipora to cover Wani’s funeral.
