North Kashmir: Thousands reach Tikipora village to attend Mannan’s funeral

Sogam: Thousands of people have converged in Tikipora village of the frontier Kupwara district to attend funeral of top Hizbul Mujahideen commander Mannan Wani, who was killed along with his associate in a gunfight this afternoon.

Witnesses told Kashmir Reader that hundreds of people from different parts of north Kashmir started marching towards Tikipora village here when news spread this afternoon that one of the two militants in Handwara gunfight was scholar turned militant Mannan Wani.

“By the time Mannan’s body reached his native village around 4:30 pm, the number of mourners had gone up in thousands. His body was kept in a playground at Chopaan Mohalla for last glimpse,” the said.

Meanwhile, witnesses told Kashmir Reader that government forces were heavily deployed along the roads leading to Sogam to restrict the movement of people. Many media persons also alleged that the government forces did not allow them to visit the village of the slain commander.
