In the wee hours today, special operations group (SOG) of police and army cordoned off Shotgund in Handwara on the inputs about the presence of militants in the village, official sources told Kashmir Reader.

The government forces intermittently fired warning shots towards the spot where they believed militants were hiding.

“However, for several hours, there was no response from the other side. Around 9:30 am, militants returned the fire leading to the outbreak of a fierce encounter,” sources said.

Sources said two to three militants were trapped in the village.
