Baramulla: At least two militants have been killed in a fierce gun-battle with government forces in a village in Handwara area of the frontier Kupwara district.

Eyewitnesses told Kashmir Reader that a contingent of special operations group (SOG) of police, army and paramilitary CRPF in the wee hours today laid a siege around Shotgund village of Handwara and launched a cordon and search operation (CASO).

The cordon remained intact till dawn when the forces fired warning shots in a bid to force militants to retaliate. However, there was no response from the other side.

“The forces continued firing shots intermittently. It was around 9:30 am, militants returned the fire triggering off a gunfight,” witnesses said.

ADGP Muneer Khan said that two militants have been killed in the encounter. He said efforts were on to ascertain the identity of the slain militants.
